Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist - Scottsdale Homes for Sale
Fall is right around the corner – and with it, the end of monsoon season – and that means it’s time to tackle all your autumn home maintenance tasks. Whether you intend to sell your home or you’ve just bought a new home in a golf community, it’s important that you stay on top of things… So where do you start?
This fall home maintenance checklist will help you make sure your house is in great shape.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

While we’re fortunate that the temperatures don’t drop so far that we can’t do outdoor maintenance during fall and winter, now’s the perfect time to tackle all kinds of maintenance projects, big and small. Fall is ideal for:

  • Adding weather stripping
  • Call an energy auditor
  • Checking safety devices
  • Cleaning dryer vents
  • Cleaning out gutters and downspouts
  • Deep-cleaning the house
  • Making exterior repairs
  • Sealing gaps in windows, doors and elsewhere
  • Trimming and maintaining trees and shrubs

Add Weatherstripping

You’ll save on home heating and cooling costs if you have up-to-date, high-quality weatherstripping installed around windows and doors. Look for a type that can withstand friction, temperature changes and location-based wear-and-tear (if it’s on the bottom of a door, for example, it’s going to drag on carpet or hit the door frame). It should seal well when the door or window is closed without preventing it from opening properly.

Call an Energy Auditor

Call the electric company and ask for an energy audit. The auditor who comes to your house can recommend improvements that will save you money. He or she might suggest upgrading your appliances, adding new weatherstripping, sealing air leaks and improving insulation.

Check Safety Devices

Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they’re in good shape as we head into more comfortable weather. Replace the batteries if it’s been a while. Now’s also a good time to check your home for radon and look at the expiration date on your fire extinguisher.

Clean Dryer Vents

Clean out your dryer vents to remove lint buildup, which can dramatically reduce your dryer’s efficiency or even start a fire. Static electricity will be back in the air once monsoon season is gone, and the tiniest spark can ignite highly flammable lint.

Clean Out Gutters and Downspouts

Clean your gutters once monsoon season makes its exit. Sand, leaf litter and other debris could be in there, which can cause moisture to pool and damage your roof or siding.

Deep-Clean the House

Think of it as spring cleaning in the fall – your home could use a seasonal deep-clean. Start in the kitchen, where you can degrease the range hood and filter, clean the oven and scrub all the grout. Move through each room in the house, and if you’re up for it, hire a professional floor cleaner to tackle your hardwoods, tile and carpets.

Make Exterior Repairs

Stroll around outside and look for any signs of damage. Check the roof, siding and foundation – and if you see anything that needs to be fixed, call out the right professional now so you don’t have to worry about it all winter.

Seal Gaps in Windows and Doors

In addition to energy issues, gaps in the windows and doors can let in unwanted guests – especially as the temperatures start to get lower. Small animals and creepy-crawlies will be looking for shelter and dark, warm places to stay.

Trim and Maintain Trees and Shrubs

Although our temperatures don’t get very cold, trees and shrubs still go into winter mode. Fall is the time to trim away dead branches and clearing out debris that could prevent your plants from staying healthy until spring.
