5 Home Staging Tips for the Holidays

5 Home Staging Tips for the Holidays
If you’re like many people thinking about selling a home this holiday season, you’re a little “iffy” on what you can do for decor. Should you stick to the tried-and-true “less is more” theme of home staging, or is it okay to put up a few seasonal decorations?
Here are five staging tips that can help you sell your home this holiday season.

5 Home Staging Tips for the Holidays

First things first: It’s totally fine to have holiday decor up while you’re selling your home. You don’t have to, though. Your best bet is to talk to your REALTOR® about what’s going to be best in your neighborhood and in your home. Once you’ve cleaned and decluttered everything – just like you would if you were staging your home at any other time of year – you can use these five holiday staging tips:

  1. Take it easy on the lights
  2. Highlight the positives – don’t cover them up
  3. Stick with your current color palette
  4. Make your home cozy, not decorated
  5. Pick the right tree

Let’s take a closer look at each of these.

#1. Take it easy on the lights

You can absolutely hang holiday lights around your home – but don’t go overboard and have the most-decorated exterior on the block. This year, it’s a good idea to skip the inflatables and stick with string lights.

#2. Highlight the positives – don’t cover them up

The right pieces of holiday decor can draw attention to the best features in your home. For example, displaying a few candles or a menorah in front of a bay window can show buyers what a great spot it is (and attract them to the view outside). Showcase your beautiful mantel with a few pinecones and simple decor rather than with a half-dozen stockings.

#3. Stick with your current color palette

Make sure your holiday decor “gels” with your existing color palette. You don’t want too much contrast; keeping things smooth and seamless is the name of the game in home staging, and that’s especially true when you have holiday decor up. Make sure your tree’s ornaments are a good fit with your home decor. (This may mean keeping some of your favorite ornaments tucked away until next year.)

#4. Make your home cozy, not decorated

Focus on creating a cozy vibe in your home. Small touches like a jar of cinnamon sticks on the kitchen counter, an evergreen wreath on the door and a bowl of pine cones in the center of your dining room table are perfect.

#5. Pick the right tree

5 Home Staging Tips for the Holidays - Pick the Right Tree
When you have extra-high ceilings, a tall tree can show buyers what a great space your living room is – but be careful that your tree isn’t extra-wide, which can clutter up the floor space and make the room appear smaller. If the space where you keep your tree is already cozy, opt for a tall, narrow tree. And this year, you may want to forego the ornaments you usually use; keep your tree simple but elegant with a completely cohesive theme.
