Scottsdale acquires 415 more acres for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve

One of the best parts of living in the Scottsdale area is the proximity to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.  Just a few minutes and miles into the preserve and you are surrounded by the beautiful Sonoran Desert. From mountain biking to hiking and camping, this great outdoors retreat attracts people from all over our start and country. And it’s about to get even bigger.

At two state land auctions on September 21, the City of Scottsdale acquired 415 acres of land to add to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The total for both bids, in which the city was the only bidder, is just over $30 million. Funding will come from dedicated sales taxes that were approved by voters dating back to 1995.
According to Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane, it was important for the city to purchase and protect the land: “These key parcels not only protect more than 400 acres of scenic land, they will provide another potential entry way into the preserve for residents who want to enjoy our beautiful Sonoran Desert.”
And there will be a lot to enjoy. With this new land, the preserve will total more than 30,000 contiguous acres, equal to about 47 square miles. The new land covers the area from Pima Rd to the 104th St alignment, and from Dynamite Blvd to the Westland Rd alignment.
Most of the land was described as “rolling typography with boulder outcroppings.” Many washes, like the Rawhide Wash, lend to lots of Sonoran Desert vegetation, riparian plants and natural desert wildlife. A major trailhead is already in the works to go at the intersection of Pima Road and Dynamite Boulevard, near the Scottsdale golf communities of Troon North and Estancia. This would give hikers direct access to both existing and planned trails.
If you’re looking for a way to either introduce yourself or your guests to the preserve, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is an excellent resource. They offer research, education, trail stewardship, guided hikes and other activities that bring residents and visitors together to appreciate our stunning locale. The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy is located near the Scottsdale golf communities of Silverleaf and DC Ranch.
Now is the perfect time of year to get out and start exploring why so many people are making AZ golf homes their own.
