For this study, 150 of the largest cities were reviewed on 24 key metrics including affordability, activities, overall quality of life and health care. It’s no surprise that Scottsdale was a winner. In fact, the city also ranked first in the country for the percentage of residents already aged 65+ (in cities with populations of more than 100,000 people).
No surprise here either, but golf ranks as a top Scottsdale activity with more than 200 courses within reach. What’s better than retiring in Scottsdale, then settling into a golf community? Walk to the greens, lunch at the club, then take an afternoon swim before an evening wine tasting. Some Arizona golf communities like DC Ranch cater to retirees of all means by offering condominiums and patio homes along with sprawling estates and organized community events.
Of course, the over 300 days of sunshine we receive in the beautiful Sonoran desert lends itself to many outdoor activities like hiking and biking. If the heat is a bit much for you in the summer, more northern Scottsdale golf communities like Desert Mountain and Troon North are at a higher elevation and can be up to 10 degrees cooler than the center of the city.
Scottsdale golf homes aren’t the only options for retirees. Also on the list: Peoria (10), Mesa (11), Tucson (29), Tempe (33) and a few others. Clearly Arizona golf communities are hot spots for discerning retirees!
