5 ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Scottsdale

Cinco de Mayo is coming up and there are a variety of ways to celebrate here in Scottsdale and around many Arizona golf course communities. But first, you may be unsure of what Cinco de Mayo really stands for. Let’s fill you in. May 5th commemorates the Battle of Puebla in Mexico, not Mexican Independence Day as many believe (which is actually in September). In this infamous battle, a small group of Mexican soldiers defeated a much larger French army. The battle took place in 1862, over 50 years after Mexico declared its independence, and is an example of how hard the Mexican people had to fight to keep their independence.
The holiday really celebrates the strength, endurance, and fortitude of the Mexican people. It has become a tradition in the Phoenix area to celebrate with everything from full out block parties to food festivals and drink specials. Here are five of our favorite ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo around Scottsdale.

Cinco de Mayo

Toast with Tacos
Mexican restaurants in the Valley live for Cinco De Mayo celebrations. Aunt Chilada’s at Squaw Peak is hosting a 21 and over festival featuring street tacos and drinks, along with performances by legendary guitarist Esteban and James Otto. Just $20 get you in starting at 3 p.m. and your first drink is included.
Bring on the Margaritas
Stick close to Scottsdale golf homes and celebrate with an Asian flare at SumoMaya. The distinctive Mexican Asian kitchen kicks things of at 11 a.m. with all day social hour pricing in the bar. Have some leftover pesos from your last trip south of the border? Bring ‘em in and use them to pay for your Casamigos Margarita (limited to the first 100 people and only two per person)!
Sweet Cinco
Need a sweet treat available most of May? Sprinkles is partnering with Casamigos Tequila (George Clooney’s brand) to create a Casamigos Margarita Cupcake that will surely be to die for. Key lime cake loaded with Casamigos Blanco Tequila and topped with tasty yet tart key lime frosting – yum! The specialty treat will be available May 1 – 22 at the Scottsdale Fashion Square location.
Gringos Locos
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at any of the three Dos Gringos locations, each conveniently located near Arizona golf communities in Chandler, Mesa and Tempe. This all day party is frequently voted as the best by Valley residents. All three locations will feature live entertainment, DJs, games, tacos, drinks and guaranteed fun!
Weekend Fiesta
Venture outside the Scottsdale and Arizona golf communities to downtown Phoenix on Saturday, May 7 or Sunday, May 8. The 23rd Annual Cindo de Mayo Phoenix Festival is family-friendly and includes live regional and cultural entertainment, lucha libre, boxing, traditional food and drinks, a kids zone, games and even giveaways.
Celebrate responsibly and enjoy, mis amigos!
