Following recent renovations to the signature Wigwam Resort Golf Club, the second 18-hole course is revamped just in time for Phoenix golf season!
This week the Patriot Course at the Wigwam Resort re-opened after an extensive renovation, much like the Gold Course went through last year. The Patriot Course was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. while the renovation was led by Nevada-based Key Golf. Key Golf specializes in southwestern courses, which was important to the Wigwam’s heritage and mission.
Scottsdale Golf Season
The Patriot’s new look includes 31 fewer bunkers than before, plus some modernization to almost 40 of the remaining bunkers. The modernization features some new shapes, new white sand and a splash-up, flat-top design. According to Wigwam Golf Club Golf Director Leo Simonetta, it’s almost like a new course: “The new white-sand bunkers set against the emerald green and striped fairways look amazing.”
The entire irrigation system was also brought up to speed, replacing sprinkler heads and making it more efficient to look it’s pristine green best.
Referred to as “the great contradiction,” the Patriot Course is known for its combination of challenges, character, sportiness, aggravation at times, and invigoration. Golfers can rest assured that the 6,000 yard, par-70 course still offers the same technical and terrain quirks as it always has.
It was just about a year ago that renovation wrapped up on the Gold Course at the Wigwam. Once considered one of the best courses in the country, the key to the renovation was to leave the “bones” in place and keep the original feel, but up the technology and design. The consensus on the redesign has been good so far.
The Wigwam Golf Resort has been a mainstay in Phoenix golf since the 1930’s. The three 18-hole championship courses take full advantage of the wide, open spaces and natural terrain while offer golfers of all skill levels a scale-able challenge. This is certainly a gem among Arizona golf communities in the west valley!
