Did you know that the Waste Management Phoenix Open is the Greenest Show on Earth?
I’m talking about the meaning behind the label given to the 80th Annual Phoenix Open tournament, “Greenest Show on Earth”. That should have been the dead ringer for understanding the concept, “green golf”. But, you see, I thought they were talking about the fairways and greens.
With TPC Scottsdale’s newly renovated Stadium course meandering over 100 acres of lushly irrigated green tee boxes, fairways and greens, light green colored Palo Verde trees and even a green island on hole No. 15 – no wonder I had missed the true meaning of “green golf.”
Green golf is about the commitment of Waste Management, Inc. for a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable operation of this tournament event.
Here are some mind-blowing green facts about the Waste Management Phoenix Open in 2014:
- Purchase of all energy for the tournament was from renewable sources through APS
- Solar was used extensively and when possible, specifically at the 18th hole hospitality suite
- Solar power compactors and lighting was used whenever feasible
- Biodiesel powered the generators
- 60% of the vehicles used during the event were run on an alternative energy
- 10,000 pounds of food was donated to local non-profits during and after the event
- 140,000 used golf balls and 750,000 tees were reused in 2013, 2014 and will be again this year (recycled and used in WMPO water features)
- The golf tees were manufactured with recycled content
- 544,000 sq. ft. of signage used in 2014 was stored and will be reused again this year
- Signage was made with recyclable materials whenever possible
- Vendors were monitored and assisted in selecting their giveaways to be made with recyclable or compostable materials
- This PGA Tour tournament was the first, and only, tournament to receive the Gold Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport in 2013
- Zero waste was sent to the landfills during or after the event which equates to 346 metric tons of greenhouse gases not being emitted
And the even better news? They have plans to do it all again, just as green, if not greener, this year!
