2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open breaks charity record

During the 2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open, a record $9,369,873 was raised. This is the highest amount of money raised by the tournament in a single year.  The proceeds will go to local charities in the greater Phoenix area.

Since taking over as the title sponsor for the tournament in 2010, Waste Management has raised over $45 million for Arizona charities. The Thunderbirds, who host and run the Waste Management Phoenix Open, have recorded more than $111 million being raised since the Phoenix Open’s emergence back in 1932.
“The Greatest Show on Grass” ranks as one of the most charitable events on the PGA tour. Waste Management Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jim Trevathan is very pleased with Waste Management’s involvement in raising money for charities, and that so many charities benefit from this tournament.

2016 Waste Management Phoenix Open Breaks Attendance

Another record that was set during the tournament was the number of attendees. Three separate attendance records were broken during the 2016 tournament: 1) the number of fans who attended “The Greatest Show on Grass,”  2) the number of single-day attendance for Friday and 3) the number of single-day attendance for Saturday.
Last year’s “The Greatest Show on Grass” accumulated 564,368 attendees for the week and was quickly broken this year with a smashing 618,365 attendees. Friday’s single-day attendance record was broken this year with 160,415 attendees, as well as Saturday’s single-day attendance record shattering at 201,003 attendees.

2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open

In 2017, the Waste Management Phoenix Open presented by the Ak-Chin Indian Community will be held on January 30th through February 5th at the TPC Scottsdale. Gaining recognition as one of the most unique stops on the PGA tour, the Waste Management Phoenix Open is one of the best attended golf tournaments in the world.
Attendees have the opportunity to learn how to do more to waste less during the week of the tournament. The Waste Management Sustainability Team provides recycling tips to fans that they can use at home and decrease their carbon footprint on earth.
The team also works with inventors throughout the year to come up with efficient green practices that can be shared with fans who attend the tournament, and to provide a way to begin the application of those green practices by only allowing recyclable or compostable materials on the grounds of the tournament.
The 2017 Phoenix Open will mark the 82nd year for the event, which is one of the five oldest events on the PGA Tour, and the 8th year as the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
The historic and record-breaking Phoenix Open tournament is certainly a highlight for both locals and visitors alike.  If you’re looking to buy a Scottsdale home that will put you close to the action, contact the Matheson Team, Scottsdale Realtors specializing in golf community real estate.
