The beauty of living in Arizona is you don’t have to worry about snow ruining your plans around an all-day outdoor activity. One of the more spectacular outdoor events Arizona showcases annually is the Renaissance Festival, and it takes more than a day to take it all in.
Every week-end this month and running through March, visitors get to interact with nearly 2,000 costumed “characters” in the merriment of a staged 16th Century European Country Fair. There is shopping in the artisan marketplaces, a five-course pleasure feast fit for a king or queen, a 30-acre circus, and 13 stages throughout the grounds to take in music and comedy shows.
You will see real live glass blowing, candle making and artisans making leather goods, stone and bone crafts and jewelry to name just a few.
There is the stunning demonstration of the ancient art of falconry where you are cautioned to hide that turkey drumstick you are munching on or lose it to some very sharp talons.
But the highlight of the fair is most definitely sitting in the 4,500-seat arena and watching knights strapped in heavy suits of armor take up lances to joust for their damsels in distress.
The Pleasure Feast happens twice a day, and more than likely you will need to make reservations before you arrive, that way you save on admission to the festival. There is always something new and this is one attraction that you never get tired of. Take a look at the schedule of events before you arrive.
Admission is $22, and parking is free. There is a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes and don’t forget to put on your sunscreen.
