Superstition Mountains: day hiking and wilderness camping one hour from Scottsdale

Most people think you have to drive for hours out of Phoenix to experience overnight wilderness camping, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether you are looking for some of the best rugged day trail hiking or exceptional overnight camping, it can be found almost in your backyard, in The Superstition Mountains.

These mountains, formed by volcanic eruptions some 30 million years ago, offer impressive rock walls, narrow snaking canyons and rugged ranges showcasing the wonders of the Arizona desert. The Superstitions are situated less than a one-hour drive from Scottsdale.
Explore Native American ruins and 600-year-old prehistoric cliff dwellings – a day hike in rough terrain. Some of these little-used trails are wilderness trails not designed for urban hiking, so plan accordingly for the unexpected.
Many a miner and his mule has gone before you on these trails, so whether you camp in Lost Dutchman State Park or take on the more challenging wilderness camping in the midst of the beauty of Cottonwoods, Sycamores and wonderful waterfalls found deep in this terrain, it requires meticulous planning.
What to pack for a day trip (at a minimum):

  • Rain ponchos or capes
  • Flashlights
  • A whistle
  • Map and compass
  • Water and sports drinks
  • Protein bars or trail mix
  • First aid kit
  • Matches

If you are considering overnight hiking and camping, be mindful that you must take out anything you take in. You will need to treat water, and temperatures drop dramatically at night so you will want to pack for comfort and survival.
If you are not familiar with this type of hiking, you may want to hire a guide. This is an area where you never want to hike or camp alone, and before you head out, give someone your itinerary and check in with them on your return.
Take advantage of this wilderness region with wildlife, solitude, and rugged beauty located just over an hour from Scottsdale.
