Spend an afternoon in Phoenix at the Musical Instrument Museum

Summer days are going strong, and in between pool parties and outdoor BBQs, it’s always good to find a cool indoor escape.
Spending an afternoon at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in north Phoenix is a great start. One of the Valley’s newest and largest museums is actually so spacious and has so many exhibits, you could spend several afternoons there and still not see everything.
As the only global musical instrument museum in the world, the MIM displays 6,000 musical instruments and artifacts from 200 countries and territories across the globe. In the Artists gallery, you can see instruments, costumes and memorabilia from pop artists like Elvis Presley and Taylor Swift. In the Mechanical Music Gallery, you can learn how instruments actually work and listen to instruments that make music without a human player. Then there’s the Experience Gallery, a favorite among visitors where playing and touching the instruments are encouraged.
While the museum has several permanent exhibits that you can experience year-round, it also hosts special exhibitions and events. Coming up this month is Musical Icon: Elvis (August 15-16), specifically planned in honor of Elvis Week. The special event includes movie showings, a photo booth, scavenger hunt and themed gift shop.
In September (September 5-6), the museum hosts Experience India, where visitors can celebrate the music and culture of East India. The exhibit will include Rangoli art, an instrument spotlight on the Sitar, Henna body art and dance performances.

The MIM is the perfect place to take kids, too, with MIMKids specialty programs for young musicians of all ages. Mini Music Makers introduces children up to five years old to basic music and movement. The caregiver and child collaboration runs in four-week sessions and is great for helping young ones develop motor and pre-language skills.
In Musical Adventures, kids between ages six and ten get a passport to explore different cultures through music making, building musical instruments and getting to see the collections up close with a tour guide. Each session is focused around a different continent with a coordinating passport stamp upon completion.
Arizona golf communities are surrounded by rich cultural experiences just like the Musical Instrument Museum. When you’re looking for a cool afternoon spot or you just want a little educational entertainment, spend some time exploring the globe through the common language of music.
