In part 1 of this guide, we talked about how to select new golf clubs using a baseline or starter set. We can all agree that using a baseline is a good starter for a beginner, plus a good way to tailor a seasoned pro style. In part 2 of this guide, we will review hybrid, wedge, and putter clubs. These clubs will help solidify and even enhance your baseline or starter set.

Hybrid. A cross between wood and iron, hybrids are the clubs of choice. Unlike the fairway wood, hybrids are a bit pricier. On the bright side, these clubs are certainly worth it. Hybrids can easily replace long irons or fairway woods, hit longer shots out of the rough, provide more control, and actually allow some creativity in your shots. No matter what your skill level, hybrids are definitely a viable option.
Wedge. Wedges should complement your iron set. By doing so, you will have options and versatility, especially in your short game. To gain a good short game you must have the ability to create low trajectory, low spin, high trajectory, and intermediate shots no matter the lie angle. This is why wedges are an integral part of your new golf club collection – you never know where you may lie.
Putter. As with any club, select your new putter based on your skill level, strengths and weaknesses. So if lowering your score is your aim, selecting a new putter should be your goal. Be sure to tailor the putter to your style – not the other way around. There are a variety of putters to choose from. Always start by identifying which putter balance fits you. Are you toe weighted and face balanced? Then select between a futuristic, a center-shafted, mallet, blade or a heel and toe weighted putter. There may seem like a lot of to choose from, but then that means that there is sure to be one that is a perfect fit for you. Once you’ve selected the putter style, start searching for the right weight, length, and lie angle that fits your style.
Although selecting new golf clubs can be a stressful, it can also be fun and inject new excitement and energy into your game. At the end of the day, taking the time to invest in the right new golf clubs for your game will be worth it. As you progress your skill level, you should also think about your equipment. Then with new technology rolling out every year, there will always be a new golf club waiting for you when you’re ready.
