Scottsdale’s Museum of the West becomes a Smithsonian Affiliate

Looking for a place to take guests visiting Arizona golf communities or an interesting place to spend an afternoon connecting to the local landscape? Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West just received Smithsonian Affiliation status, making it a standout attraction for history, arts and culture in the Valley.

Western Spirit is located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale surrounded by renowned Southwestern art galleries and eateries. The stunningly clean architecture and mixed media exterior certainly does not look like museums of the past. Museum Director Mike Fox describes the museum as a place of ideas rather than objects.
The museum is an immersive experience introducing guests to the unique story of the American West. Through education, inspiration, and engagement, guests have the opportunity to not only reflect on the art and culture of the Old West, but see how our modern landscape is transitioning to the New West.
Scottsdale Museum of the West is known for its unique multimedia and sensory exhibitions. Sound, light, color and texture all combine to create an interactive, immersive environment that encourages discovery. Join the Story Circle and take in a performance of stories of the Old West as they were once traditionally passed down from earlier generations. In the Sculpture Courtyard you can take in western artwork in a natural desert environment, all while taking a breath and relaxing outdoors.
so, what made the Museum of the West a good candidate to partner with the world’s largest museum and research organization? When Richard Kurin, Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture at the Smithsonian Institution, presented museum board members with the affiliation on November 20, he noted that the objects, artwork and artifacts within the museum are indispensable historical resources.
The Smithsonian Affiliations program was created with the intention of sharing collections, scholarships, and exhibitions with Americans across the country and in their own communities. The Smithsonian partners with museums and cultural or educational organizations that broaden perspectives and create lasting experiences in the worlds of history, science, world cultures, and the arts.
As a member of the Smithsonian Affiliates program, museums may receive Smithsonian collections on loan, as well as help bringing in visiting professionals and student interns. Any nonprofit museum, center, or educational organization may submit a proposal to become a Smithsonian Affiliate.
Western Spirit joins the Smithsonian Affiliate ranks with other Arizona organizations like the Heard Museum, the Musical Instrument Museum, the Challenger Space Center and the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum. Museum of the West is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and closed on major holidays. Admission is only $13 with discounts available for seniors, active military members, students, and children 6-17 years old.
