As if we didn’t already know all the fun in store for residents and visitors of Scottsdale AZ, WalletHub has just made it official. In their list of 150 cities throughout the country, Scottsdale came in as the 10th most fun city.
To see how Scottsdale made the top 10, let’s look at how one even calculates a “fun city.” WalletHub looked at three categories: entertainment and recreation, nightlife and parties, and costs. Then the cities were ranked under 51 various sub-categories and metrics like restaurants and open hours, sports facilities, parks, theaters, movie costs and availability of recreation centers. Each city’s metric was graded using a 100-point scale, then an overall score was calculated using weighted averages across each metric.
Part of the fun ranking was also diversity – cities that offer a broad spectrum of activities and “fun” for everyone ranked higher than cities that pigeon-holed themselves as more family-friendly or more nightlife-oriented. Cost was also a big factor – the fun had to be affordable for most people. Elements like movies costs and average beer prices helped with that configuration.
So just like with scoring top retirement points, Scottsdale’s many golf courses helped it inch up the scale. Scottsdale actually boasts 13 golf courses per every 1000,000 people (according to WalletHub). And that’s not counting some of the more well-known, private championship courses.
The city’s fitness fanatics also appreciate more options per capita than most other cities on the list – there are about 228 fitness centers per 100,000 residents. And Scottsdale ranked number three for the most acres of parkland per capita.
Scottsdale wasn’t the only Arizona city to make the list. Tempe came in just three spots later at number 13 and Gilbert also made the list, but much more towards the bottom at number 132. Here is the rest of the top 20:
- Las Vegas
- Orlando
- Miami
- New Orleans
- Salt Lake City
- Cincinnati
- Fort Lauderdale
- St. Louis
- Atlanta
- Scottsdale
- Tampa
- Portland, OR
- Tempe
- Pittsburgh
- San Francisco
- Honolulu
- Knoxville
- Reno
- Denver
- Minneapolis
Using WalletHub’s 100-point weighted average point system, Scottsdale’s overall fun score came in at 54.30. Tempe was just points below at 50.32. And for some perspective, Gilbert’s fun score came in at 29.71.
