Uber is one of the greatest inventions since the taxi cab. If you are headed to a party, special event or the airport, and want to eliminate the hassle or worry of driving, parking or standing and waiting for a ride, Uber is the best new driving service option in town.
The company offers 4 different styles of rides in Phoenix. UberX is their lowest cost option, UberXL is a lower cost option for groups, UberBlack is a premium ride service and Uber SUV offers premium rides for groups.
What makes Uber different from other taxi and driving services is that there is no whistling, no hailing and no cash involved!
Uber operates from a free smartphone app. Download the app once and set up an account allowing the application to use your phone’s GPS to find where you are. When you are ready for a ride, open the application, input your destination and the application connects you with a nearby driver.
UberX is lower in cost than a taxi cab. One of our team members traveled from DC Ranch in Scottsdale to Pima Sky Harbor Airport recently. That ride, including a tip, cost $38.59. Compare that to $70 – $80 for a taxi or driving service.
Other features of Uber include:
- get an estimate of the cost of the ride before riding,
- select the type of ride you want (UberX, XL, Black or SUV), monitor the position of your ride,
- call your driver,
- receive a picture of the driver, information on the car make, model and license plate number,
- wait inside and keep doing what you were doing until your driver arrives.
Drivers do not accept cash. In order to set up an account with Uber, you have to provide credit card information in your file.
Uber’s drivers are independent contractors who have been screened, insured and legally qualified to drive.
The company’s software is it’s competitive advantage. The software connects drivers and riders with full transparency on the locations of both, available in real-time.
Because the company was established as driving-service rather than a traditional taxi service, their fares are not subject to the same regulation that a traditional taxi service is. Uber’s rates may vary with supply and demand.
Uber operates in 53 countries today in North and South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa and Asia Pacific. The Phoenix metro area including Scottsdale is the 26th metropolitan area that Uber ventured into, and Uber continues to grow rapidly.
The company started operations in Arizona in November 2013 and they report their business has more than quadrupled since the start-up. They have more than tripled their drivers in the area since July.
With seasonal travel, tourists in town, the Super Bowl, the Waste Management Open, Barrett-Jackson car show, and a host of other events, there’s no doubt that Uber’s usage here in the Valley will explode in the next few months.
