Keep your home and family safe: change smoke detector batteries once a year

It’s the start of a New Year, and now is a good a time to change out your smoke detector batteries in your home to ensure your smoke detectors are functioning properly. Did you know that the risk of dying in a home fire is 50% less when there are working smoke alarms?

Remember to change your smoke detector batteries at least once a year.

Remember to change your smoke detector batteries at least once a year.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoke alarms sounded in only 50% of house fires reported to fire departments in this country between 2007 and 2011. And, in 3 out of 5 house fire deaths, there was no smoke alarm or no working smoke alarm present.
One of the reasons smoke detectors fail to work is that homeowners forget to maintain them.
Experts say that homeowners should:

When smoke detectors do not work, it’s usually due to the batteries being dead, missing, or the fact that the smoke detector is disconnected.  Many people disconnect their alarms to stop the annoying chirping that indicates a low battery (and only seems to start up in the middle of the night.)
So, that’s why we’re reminding you to proactively change your smoke alarms batteries, so you’re not caught unprepared in the middle of the night, tempted to yank the alarm off the wall, only to forget about it.
If you live in Scottsdale and need help installing smoke detectors in your home, the Scottsdale Fire Department can help.
Have a wonderful and safe 2015!
