Follow Arizona pool barrier regulations to enjoy your backyard pool safely

Ah, the dog days of summer!  The weather is warm here in the Scottsdale area, and the kids are getting lots of use out of the backyard pool.  Grape popsicle stains on the pool deck, prune fingers, and cannonballs are all part of the childhood memories that are created daily in our backyard!
What I don’t remember from my own childhood days is a fence around our pool or anyone else’s for that matter.  So when we moved to Arizona and bought our first home, we were surprised to be told that under state law it is mandatory to have a fence around the pool or some other kind of barrier that meets regulations when there is a child under 6 years of age living in the home.

Our realtor guided us through the process and gave us a pamphlet prepared by the Arizona Association of Realtors titled Understanding the Pool Barrier Law early in our home search process.
Once under contract we learned that by law the seller is required to give the buyer a copy of the pool safety notice from the Arizona Department of Health Services, but our realtor had already taken care of that as well.
We learned that each city and county has its own swimming pool barrier ordinances.  In other words, the laws regarding pool barriers are different from city to city.
The info can be found in the AAR Buyer Advisory under Swimming Pools and Spas.  And if you have questions specifically for Scottsdale you can call Planning & Development at (480) 312-2500.
