Experience the colors of autumn with day trips to Sedona, Payson and Mogollon Rim

If you’ve lived in Scottsdale during the fall and winter months, you have experienced the fact that there is no need to rake leaves or shovel snow in this city, and that’s the beauty of living here!  But, if you miss the sight and smell of leaves turning color, here are a couple of day trips to enjoy the crisp air and autumn foliage.

Sedona
Sedona is the perfect day trip at any time of the year for the red and orange hues of the rocks found nowhere else in the country.   I love to have people in my car the first time they spot those beautiful red rocks – there is typically a gasp followed by silence.  Well, compound the already majestic views with the changing colors of leaves, and you have a backdrop to a fantasy land.
You’ll most likely want to hike through some of the canyons to enjoy the picturesque cottonwoods and oaks.  Then, driving out of town on highway 89A, you will want to go through Oak Creek Canyon where the branches reach over and practically touch your car window.  And don’t forget to pull over for a gallon of fresh squeezed apple cider.
Payson and the Mogollon Rim
Another option is to head northeast of the Valley to Payson where the pines rustle and the cool breezes waft. Once in Payson, head due east where you will dip down into Star Valley (stop to purchase a pumpkin) as you begin your climb up to the Mogollon Rim.
Watch as the trees change from golden yellows to blaring reds and oranges.  This is when I like to be a passenger so I can take in the grandeur of the trees down in the canyons off the rim. Nowhere else in the state do you experience that flying feeling with your bum securely planted in a car seat.
“The Rim,” as referred to by locals, is a boundary between two worlds – the cool high country above and the warm desert below.
The aspens await you with their shimmering golds, reminiscent of the old prospectors that once panned these rivers up in the mountain back country.
The best kept secret in Arizona: it has colors that will rival any fall foliage tour in this country!
