El Chorro: hands down, the best Sunday brunch in the Scottsdale area

For those who live in the Scottsdale and Paradise Valley area, we know the best kept secret in the Valley for Sunday brunch. With just the mention of sticky buns locals will nod their heads and reply “El Chorro Lodge”.  For those visitors that return year-after-year to vacation, they are in on it, too.

El Chorro’s sticky buns

El Chorro — the “Lodge” has recently been dropped when referring to this quaint Sunday mecca, although the locals just can’t break the ingrained habit — is infamous for their sticky buns and eggs benedict. It’s a hard decision when it comes to which eggs benedict to splurge on, whether to order the standard Canadian Bacon, or smoked salmon, vegetarian, beef tenderloin, or maybe it’s time to go all out and order the lobster benedict this time. One is contemplating the decision well in advance in the car on the way there.
For those who haven’t been, it’s a unique experience you’ll want to put on your bucket list. The sooner the better because you’ll find out about the legit happy hour with $5 appetizers and drinks that are not watered down. In fact, they’re a bit on the strong side! While happy hour is a deal, plan on five-star prices at all other times.
They have a new winter cocktail menu, with tantalizing sips of Ginger Mojito, Maple Old Fashions, and Grapefruit Basil Martini. They usually have a wine special you can afford, but their recent offering is Louis XIII de Remy Martin Grande Champagne Cognac, their last bottle, available at an exclusive price of $2,300.
The restaurant is beautiful with its recent remodel, although the locals pine for the stuffy bar and crocks of cheese that made rubbing elbows a necessity since there just wasn’t that much room. But the original footprint of the lodge has been retained and the entire property has been renovated with the latest technologies, a new entertainment sound system, Wi-Fi and the addition of an electric car charger, a welcome to a new era.
The history of El Chorro is a long one with the likes of Clark Gable, Milton Berle, John Wayne, Barry Goldwater and other prominent figures visiting the lodge in its early days—oh, if walls could talk!
