This is a great example of a home with a defined entrance area, a tall shady tree, a paved, upside-down Saltillo tile walkway, a water feature and a number of colorful accent pots.
1) Think about the Space: Plan how you’re going to transform the space by laying out a strategy, to-do list, timeline and budget for the area. Visualize how the plants you choose will fit and grow together in the space you designate for them. You don’t want your plants to outgrow the space as they mature.
2) Plan out a Resting Space: A resting space is an area that’s been set aside for someone to take a seat, pause, and enjoy the surroundings. It usually includes a chair or a bench, pavers, a stone near the front door, and other finishing touches. A little bit of paint goes a long way here as well in terms of making an area look brand new.
3) Plant a Shady Tree: Having a large, shade tree near your home’s entry way is as utilitarian as it is impactful. Large trees protects your yard and in particular, smaller, more sensitive plants, from the summer sun’s powerful rays.
4) Pave a Walkway: This one’s a no-brainer. You don’t want your buyers to trip and fall because you don’t have a designated walkway at the front of your home. Plain concrete walkways look standard, so make a good first impression by choosing a less-than-ordinary material like decomposed granite, cut stone flags or pavers.
5) Add Plant Beds: Everybody loves looking at flowers, so adding a variety of them to the front of your home is an easy way to generate visual interest. Rather than setting clumps of flowers close to the house, consider planting your flowers in bold arching lines. Also try to use cacti and flowering plants that are native to the desert. Natural vegetation uses less water and saves you money.
6) Add Accents: Accents are like adding art pieces to your garden – they add texture and interest to your property. Boulders, gates and glazed pots add color and set your property apart from homes with neutral (and usually boring) entryways.
7) Consider adding a Water Feature: If you want to add a water feature to your home’s entryway, put it in an area where it can be easily seen and heard. Simple water features like bubbling urns tend to look best under small trees, at the side of an entryway or in the middle of a flower bed. Water features appeal to buyers on more than just a visual level, so it’s a surefire way to leave a lasting impression.
8) Add Subtle Lighting: Instead of installing a spotlight, lay out your lights so that they guide you towards a fixture or plant. Less is always more with lighting – too many lights can lead to an unpleasantly bright and distracting display. Fixture lights should be low-voltage bulbs between 20 and 75 watts, and should either up-light, down-light or silhouette tree trunks, leaves or pads.
