Troon North - #1 of 5 "must play" courses in Scottsdale

Troon North – #1 of 5 “must play” courses in Scottsdale

1. Troon North:
The Monument and Pinnacle courses are the cream-of-the-crop of Scottsdale’s daily-fee “must-plays” according to the publication.  With two immaculately groomed 18-hole courses built around the natural ravines and foothills of Pinnacle Peak, Troon North is a golfer’s dream.

The adaptation of the natural landscape into the golf course creates an incomparable experience. Troon North’s Monument and Pinnacle courses, designed by Tom Weiskopf, consistently rank at the top of every golfer’s must-play list. According to Golf Digest, the Pinnacle Course ranked in the top 25 best golf courses in Arizona in 2013.

The 37,000 square foot Troon North Clubhouse houses The Dynamite Grille, a casual contemporary bar and grill that was recently renovated.  Troon North has an outstanding golf shop, locker rooms and banquet, conference and catering facilities.

The residential community of Troon North offers a full range of homes for sale, from town homes, to semi-custom detached homes, to custom estates.  For people who want to build their own custom home, there are still a few vacant lots on the Troon North resale market available for purchase.

The Boulders

2. The Boulders:

There are two challenging Jay Morrish designed courses at the Boulders; The North Course, a 6,811-yard, par 72 and The South Course, a 6,726-yard, par 71. The courses are considered some of the most demanding in the Southwest, and are known for their rugged beauty.

The Boulders has excellent practice facilities and a top-notch Golf pro-shop. The Waldorf Astoria Hotel is available for overnight stays and it includes access to fine restaurants and a 33,000 square foot Spa with all spa services as well as a Pilates studio, tea room, salon, steam room, sauna, Japanese bath and pool.

The Boulders also has a full range of real estate available, from “lock and leave villas” to custom homes.

3. Grayhawk Golf Club:
The Grayhawk Golf Club combines two of the Southwest’s most thrilling and recognized golf courses with the ambiance and service you would expect from a private club. The Talon Course, designed by David Graham and Gary Panks, is a 7000-yard, par-72 layout with dramatic views of the McDowell Mountains.  The Raptor course was designed by Tom Fazio, and is a 7108-yard, par-72 course that presents an exceptional challenge.

Both courses offer a variety of tee placements giving players at every skill level an opportunity for a fun day on the links.
Grayhawk also has a highly acclaimed golf learning center established and overseen by golf-greats Peter Kostis and Gary McCord.
The 40,000 square foot Clubhouse includes the Quill Creek Café and Phil’s Grill, The Morning Joint (Mojo’s) as well as locker rooms, conference rooms and a golf shop.
Grayhawk real estate includes gated and non-gated neighborhoods that include condos, town homes, detached semi-custom homes and custom estates, many with golf course and mountain views, and properties for every budget.

4. TPC Scottsdale

Tournament Players Club of Scottsdale also has two 18-hole courses: the famous Stadium Course and the Champions’ Course both set against the backdrop of the beautiful McDowell Mountains. They are uniquely different golfing alternatives.

Home of the PGA Tour’s fan-favorite, Waste Management Phoenix Open, The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale has hosted some of golf’s greatest memories since its opening in 1986.  You can test your own skills on the same fairways.  Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf teamed up and created a great blend of challenge and playability on The Stadium.  It is currently closed for renovation and is slated to reopen in November, 2014.
Tip:  If you’re visiting Scottsdale, check out the packages offered at the resort adjacent to the TPC at The Fairmont Princess.  The Fairmont often has stay-packages that include a round of golf at TPC.
The shorter Champions’ Course is a desert course. Golfers can walk or ride. Rivaling The Stadium  in beauty and playability, the Randy Heckenkemper-designed Champions’ Course offers a desert golf experience.
Both courses are maintained to PGA Tour standards year-round.
The TPC property includes two Clubhouses and restaurants, one for each course.
The adjacent “TPC-Princess” community, offers the gamut from lock and leave town homes, to custom homes overlooking the golf course.  There are also new construction town homes currently under development.

5. Talking Stick :
When Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore were hired to design Talking Stick’s two courses they were charged with assuring the courses were distinctly different in terms of play.

The North Course is a test of your target-golf skill.  You can run shots up the fairways or fly them to the green.  The South Course is tree-lined with raised greens and plays ‘as you see it’.

What’s special about Talking Stick’s golf courses is that they are bunker-rich, built on tribal lands and have no homes around them – it makes for an even more tranquil day on the links.

Good to know….
Locals are keenly aware that prime time for golf is February through April and the fees to play these great courses are highest during the peak season.  The weather from late-September through January and again from April through May is also quite good here, and typically great months to play golf.  Better yet, daily-green fees are lower.
Golfers will find rates lowest in the summer months from June through early September.   It may be warm, but there is more tee time availability and you can play at a faster pace. If you play early, you can beat the heat.  In the summer, golf courses cater to players with water, iced-towels and other amenities to keep you cool.
