Halloween has certainly evolved from its ancient beginning as a Celtic festival to celebrate the dead, and Scottsdale’s Halloween traditions are evolving, too.  The Matheson Team has “dug-up” 10 ideas to get you into the “spirit” of Halloween in the Scottsdale area, including haunted houses, parties and costume contests.  There is something on the list for everyone in the family to enjoy.

1. Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare
Location: Westworld
Dates:  Thursday – Sunday through November 1
Time: 7:00 pm
This frightful attraction provides three times the spooky fun in 3-D with animatronics and wild special effects for one price, all based on Zombie’s horror films.  Open to every brave soul over 12 years of age.
2. 18th Annual Pumpkins at the Peak
Location: Squaw Peak Hilton
Date: Friday, October 24
Time:  5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Everyone in the family is invited to come in costume to this Halloween celebration for plenty of trick-or-treats – bring your own bag!  The Phoenix Police Department and Squaw Peak Hilton are hosting this Halloween party to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank. Bring two cans or food or $5 as your entry fee for the whole family. The 4-acre river ranch will be transformed into a spooky monster haven. Fortune-tellers, face painters and games for all.
3. Salt River Field Balloon Spooktacular
Location:  Salt River Field at Talking Stick
Dates: October 24-25
Times: 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm
This is the 4th year Talking Stick has hosted the Spooktacular which is intended for the entire family.  Twenty hot air balloons will be on-hand for tethered balloon rides.  Trick-or treaters are welcomed; last year over 2,000 pounds of candy was distributed.  There is live music, food, a haunted house, fireworks and much more.
4. Howl-O-Ween
Location: The Phoenix Zoo
Dates: October 24-25
Times 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
The Phoenix Zoo is hosting a Howl-o-Ween celebration for the whole family where tricks and treats will be around every corner!  Bring your trick-or-treaters all decked out for the occasion to enjoy haunted trails, magic shows, a dance party and animal encounters.
5. Wicked Ball at Talking Stick Resort
Location:  Talking Stick Resort
Date: Friday, October 31
Time:  9:00 pm – ?
This is the costume party with $7,000 in prizes for those 21 years or older. Join FM 101.5’s Lada La, emcee for the evening, and party to electronic sounds of Manufactured Superstars.
6. Raven’s Halloween Ball and Costume Contest
Location:  Talking Stick Resort
Date: Friday, October 31
Time:  8:00 pm – ?
The 9th annual costume ball, hosted by Raven at the Talking Stick Resort, is for adults 21 years of age and older.  Dance to the music of SMASHED performing R&B, Pop, Funk and Top 40. Stick around for the best costume contest at midnight where three prize categories will be chosen by the staff ……be sure to tip your waitstaff…good for a vote!
7.  Sleuths & Spies Halloween Dance Party
Location:  Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Date: Friday, October 31
Time: 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
It’s all in the name!  Come dressed as your favorite super sleuth or spy and be ready to dance your “Get-Smart” dance shoes off for tricks and treats.  You can enjoy the art while you’re there!
8. Ghouls Night Out
Location: Hotel Valley Ho
Date:  Friday, October 31
Time: 9:00 pm – 2:00 am
DJ Mad Hatter kicks-off this costume and dance party and is joined by local favorite, Whiplash, for a “come as you aren’t” night at the Hotel Valley Ho.  Several best costume prizes will be awarded.  Buy tickets in advance and save.
9. Haunted Hotel Ball
Location: The Saguaro
Dates:  Friday thru Saturday, October 31 – November 1
Time:  Friday and Saturday night: 9:00 pm – 2:00 am;  and Saturday: 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Be creative with the costume that you’ll be wearing for two days as you experience the Haunted Hotel Ball as they celebrate in true style with on Halloween and All Saints Day. It’s three parties over two days for one price. Arizona’s top nightclub acts and DJ’s will be emceeing.
10.  The Nightmare on Princess Drive Haunted Halloween Party
Location:  Fairmont Scottsdale Princess
Date:  Friday, October 31
Time:  9:00 pm – 2:00 am
Have a fabulous costume on by midnight and you might win a resort vacation, dinner at Bourbon Steak or La Hacienda or gift certificates to the Willow Stream Spa. Another goulish and spooky dance party hosted by DJ Pulse this year.
